Design Hotels presents five new pulse-quickening properties

Scribner's Catskill Lodge

BERLIN – Much more than simply a curated collection of design-led hotels, Design Hotels members are a tangible celebration of creativity, diversity, and innovation. From fusing age-old Japanese hospitality principles with cutting edge sustainable design, to capturing the cultural zeitgeist of the Catskills Mountains in New York State, five new members are providing gateways to some of the world’s most exciting destinations- both unsung and seemingly familiar - in their own inimitable style.
The Dwell Hotel - Chattanooga, USA
Chattanooga, Tennessee, is known as somewhat of a cultural melting pot. Situated at the midway point between metropolitan Atlanta and charming Nashville, The Dwell Hotel - the city’s first luxury boutique hotel - is the perfect reflection of this sentiment. Housed in a turn-of-the-century brick and limestone building, the hotel’s interiors offer a funky take on mid-century modern, with each of the 16 guestrooms evoking a journey into another era. Aesthetics defined by vintage furniture, bold colors, exposed brick, and curated art result in a unique Old Hollywood-meets-South Beach vibe. The nightlife at The Dwell Hotel promises to be equally theatrical thanks to the Terra Mae restaurant and Matilda Midnight bar.
HUUS Gstaad - Gstaad, Switzerland
In an idyllic Swiss Alp setting surrounded by 250 kilometers of slopes, Huus Gstaad is a refreshing addition to the resort’s traditional hospitality scene with its unique concept of intimate mountain hideaway underlined by a firm familial flair. The hotel’s name is derived from the Swiss-German word for “home”, and it is this principle which informs the 136-room Huus Gstaad’s visual identity, realized by award-winning Swedish studio Stylt Trampoli. Cozy, inclusive spaces are enriched with warm, organic tones, while the use of natural, locally sourced materials ensures a harmonious relationship with nature. Throw in fine restaurants, a bar, a fully-fledged family area, an adventure lounge, and a world of all-weather expertly guided outdoor activities, and you have a house for all seasons.
Satoyama Jujo - Niigata, Japan
Based upon the traditional model of a Japanese home with a backdrop of the dramatic Osawa mountain pass, Satoyama Jujo resists the cliche of a traditional rural retreat, fusing Japanese folk architecture with modern design and eco-conscious sensibilities. The visual concept of the hotel’s 12 guestrooms is inspired by the principles of washitsu (a traditional Japanese room) with tatami flooring, lofty spaces, and natural light flooding through oversized windows. Satoyama Jujo’s Sanaburi restaurant and communal areas - including the spectacular Amanogawa hot spring - are a palpable celebration of Niigata’s unique narrative, facilitating social gathering and togetherness in a spectacular setting.
Carlota - Quito, Ecuador
Housed in a 19th-century building in one of Latin America’s most spectacular historical districts, the Carlota Hotel has been transformed seamlessly from a private residence to a gathering point for local creatives. Carlota’s recovered interior courtyard plays host to an open-plan lobby connecting through to the back patio, where a stunningly-restored stone staircase frames a planted backdrop influenced by Quito’s Spanish gardens. The capital’s flora and fauna also provide the aesthetic inspiration for the 12 guestrooms with a color palette reminiscent of the city’s native birdlife. For those looking for full cultural immersion, the hotel’s rooftop terrace boasts panoramic views over the UNESCO-listed neighborhood, while the Bistro and extensive wine cellar enables diners to experience the traditional foods and tastes of Ecuador.
Scribner's Catskill Lodge - Hunter Mountain, USA
Amid the verdant forests and undulant mountains of the Catskills -long a refuge for Manhattanites craving respite from the concrete jungle- Scribner’s Catskill Lodge is the epitome of a sophisticated luxury retreat, albeit one with a deep respect for the area’s rich heritage. Originally built in the 1960s, the 38-room mountain lodge’s renaissance was undertaken with the view of bringing the Hudson Valley’s creative reawakening to the property. The region’s sense of place shines through nostalgic design, bespoke cultural programming, and local culinary offerings served at the hotel’s farm-to-table restaurant Prospect. Add a pool, spa, and gym in early 2017, and Scribner’s reputation as the consummate clubhouse for urban adventurers is cemented.
