Oman records 16% growth in tourists in 2016

Oman had attracted over 3 million tourists in the year 2016, as per the annual report of the Ministry of Tourism. The report mentioned that as many as 3,042,695 travellers had visited the Sultanate last year that marks a 16.2% rise from the same, in 2015.

The constant development of infrastructural facilities, along with the projects that boost the tourism potential of the region catapulted the tourist statistics.

The highest growth rate can be attributed to the cruise vessels in which 217,153 tourists had visited the Sultanate as compared to 147,858 tourists that represents an increase of nearly 46.9%. Last year, the Salalah Khareef Season had lured in about 652,986 tourists last year, that was 26.8% up from the previous year.

On the other hand, the castles and forts had drawn 284,725 tourists that marks an increase of 14.3%.

The number of tourists who had visited Al Jabal Al Akhdhar was 162,499 that marks an increase of about 0.3%. Water ponds in Wadi Bani Khalid had attracted 156,119 visitors that was a 38.3% rise and the Ras Al Ginz Turtle Reserve was thronged by 36,070 tourists. The number of hotels reached 337 last year as compared to 318 in the year 2015 with a growth rate of about 6%.

The number of beds had increased to 29,358 beds in 2016 as compared to 25,966 beds in the year 2015 that marks an increase of about 13.8%.

The report also added that the number of hotel apartments and rooms had increased to 18,825 rooms and hotel apartments in 2016 as compared to 16,695 rooms and hotel apartments in 2015 with a growth of 12.8%.

The year 2016 was an active one in terms of the opening of hotel facilities since 39 hotels were opened in different governorates of the Sultanate, apart from the 2,512 rooms and hotel apartments.

It is expected that 59 hotels would be opened in 2017 that would add 3,975 hotel rooms.

And, 22 hotels would be opened in the year 2018 and this is expected to add a total of 484 hotel rooms
