U.S. lawmakers curb American tourists from North Korea

Right now, the lawmakers of the U.S. are trying to dissuade American tourists from planning visits to North Korea.

Two congressmen had introduced a bill on Thursday that attempts to cut off a source of foreign exchange to the government of Kin Jong Un and check it from detaining more U.S. citizens.

Joe Wilson, a Republican representative said that tourist travel to North Korea does nothing but offering finances to a dictatorial regime that would in turn be utilized to develop weapons to put Americans at peril and also threaten the allies of the U.S. What makes matters worse, feel the U.S. lawmakers is the fact that the ruling party has quite often imprisoned foreign civilians and thereafter used them as bargaining baits to gain credibility from the West.

The bill is referred to as the North Korea Travel Control Act.

And, it would require licenses for any American citizen who would wish to travel to the country of North Korea. Licenses for tourists would not be issued.

This proposal comes a few months after China and a few other nations have been trying to pressurize North Korea over its nuclear weapons program. The State Department of the United States strongly cautioned U.S. citizens from visiting North Korea and it has stated that they are at “serious risk of arrest and long-term detention” as per the law enforcement system of North Korea.

At least 16 Americans have been detained in North Korea in the last decade, according to the department. Four of them are still held.

But then, it has been observed that people continue to go to this country.

Adam Schiff who is the democratic representative who introduced the bill with Wilson said that heightened tensions with North Korea had increased the danger that U.S. citizens would be detained for political reasons. Wilson has, in fact, observed a rise in the number of trips to this nation in the last few years by Americans also other Western travellers. But then, the number of Chinese visitors has dwarfed these tourist arrivals.
